When I think of this concept, I remember a story of Gandhi that I read. I am paraphrasing but the essence of the story is this. Gandhi was spending some dedicated time in silence while he was traveling through India. Just as he was boarding a train, a reporter came up to him and asked if he could share a message with the world. Gandhi grabbed a piece of paper and wrote the reporter a quick note just as the train was about to depart. The note read, "My life is my message". And so it was. There is no mistake what that man stood for in every fiber of his being.
Yoga is a practice of making the message of our lives conscious and connected. A practice of integrated engagement. Yoga is all about what you can do. Not in the sense of an outward performance of more and more radical poses. Rather in doing what we can to embody grace within all of the experiences that arise in the dynamic flow of our lives - no exceptions, no excuses.
Yoga is about taking a clear and conscious breath and moving our bodies on the presence of that breath.. It's about how we place our hands and touch the earth. It's about how we place our feet and stand clear. It's about the path that we walk and how we rise up in our standing poses and show up in our lives in a way that says "I'm all in", body, mind, heart and soul. It's about lifting our chests in a way that uplifts our hearts. It's about holding and caring for us all in the widths of those uplifted hearts. It's about who we are in our most authentic truth and how we choose to embody and express that truth and so create a conscious message of our lives. A message that becomes our chapter in the story of the great epic of the evolution of this world.
What is the message of your life so far? (not what you want it to be, but what is it actually)
What is the message that you send to yourself, day in and day out? Usually, this is the message that we reflect out and offer to the world. Often we feed ourselves messages of lack, shame, doubt, fear and aggression. We speak to ourselves in such cruel ways, ways that we would never dream of speaking to anyone else. Could there be a correlation with this and the aggression that we see out in the world today?
What is your message in your relationships? To family, friends, loved ones, co-workers, adversaries?
What is the message of your work? The message of how you engage with your work?
What is the message of your play? Your leisure? Your efforts for rejuvenation?
What is your message to the earth?
What is your message to the world?
Where are your actions in line with the highest? Your highest aspirations, and the greatest good? Where are they not?
What is the message you have written on your body? Your mind? The stories that lay over your heart?
This contemplation is not meant to have you judge, but rather to get conscious through the light of love and awareness so that you can inspire and empower more clarity in the message of your life.
The good news is that your message, your piece of the story in the chapter of life, begins with the story of now. A now that is continually unfolding within a story whose entire fate has yet to be determined. An unwritten future lays now in the palms of your hands, a fate saved for your current actions. What will the future be?
I am begging you now with tears in my eyes, to consciously take your place in the story. To sit and get still, to get close to the center of you, the source of you, the soul of you. To get so near your essence that authenticity can be seen through the eyes of your truth. Be radically still and magnificently silent so that you can sense what is there for you, of you, when all else falls away. Take the time, everyday, to see for yourself. Then welcome yourself, home to yourself and rest there awhile till things get more clear.
Then ask yourself, from the space of ever-loving abundance within you, from the infinite grace at rest within that flows throughout. From the center of you, from the source of you, from the soul of you... Why are you here? What unique and essential offering have you to make of yourself, to yourself and to this world? What is the message that your spirit is longing to share?
Then know, that finding your center and knowing your truth is not enough. Not in the practice of yoga, or in this life. If this intention does not get the breath of life, is not drawn out into actual being and we continue to scribble though our lives mindlessly, unconsciously in the dark; the fate of our message and the story of the world rests that much more in the hands of doubt, shame, fear, lack, and unconscious apathy and aggression.
So dedicate now to give your intention resolve. To give your highest aspirations the breath of life. Honor the call of your soul as a source to empower your grace to take action. Then do. So that the fate of your message and your life and the story of the evolution of the wold will rest that much more in the hands of conscious love.
A Call to Action:
Today on this one precious day, embody the actions that write the message of your commitments over your excuses, your possibilities over your limitations and your love (always your love) over your fear.
